MX19.3 Base 4 new ISO’s !

I am pleased to announce an update for my 3 x personal MX-Base respin ISO’s, plus a new 64-bit Fluxbox ISO !

MX-19.3_base_386 (Xfce only)
MX-19.3_base_x64 (Xfce only)
MX-19.3_flux_base_386 (Fluxbox + Xfce)
MX-19.3_flux_base_x64 (Fluxbox + Xfce) ! New !

All ISO’s are current through to 1st December 2020 and include all the fixes, enhancements and upgrades available through the MX repositories. The Xfce ISO’s do not come with Fluxbox preloaded.

MX Base ISO’s are designed to provide a clean, clutter free MX-Linux Base system that includes all of the goodness of MX Linux while excluding 150+ packages, and their dependencies, at the build stage. These are perfect to use as a base for your next project, whether it’s File Server, Dev box, TV Box, Media Server, Print server or whatever you heart desires.

MX Base is not to be confused with a “Lite system”. The startup RAM usage for the Xfce ISO’s is only marginally lower than our regular Xfce ISO, while the Fluxbox ISO uses only 260MB RAM at startup, easier on older systems, but equally as good on modern processors (64-bit version for EFI boot).

The Fluxbox ISO’s have received the biggest overhaul, the Desktop now defaults to using the Tint2 toolbar. Users not familiar with the standard Fluxbox toolbar will feel right at home with Tint2, which works like the toolbars found on the majority of OS’s used around the globe.

All ISO’s are multi-lingual, users can choose from 60 languages through the Live ISO GRUB menu, a feature common to all MX ISO’s. For Classic Boot, use F2 to set the language, and F3 to set the Locale. For EFI Boot, use the Customize Boot (text menus) option, and choose your language and country using the number values that represent your choice as you go through the first few text screens. Your choices will transfer over to a fixed disk install should you wish to do so, eliminating the need to set languages post installation.

All ISO’s are signed with gpg so you can verify their authenticity after downloading the ISO and its accompanying .sig file. You’ll need to add my public key from a keyserver first to complete the verification. Open a terminal and paste the following to import my public key.

gpg --keyserver hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 409C71B3BCFDED0A

You can then verify the authenticity of an ISO by issuing a command like the one below in a terminal, opened to the same folder as the downloads.

gpg --verify <name-of-file.iso.sig>

  1. Known Issue:
The Fluxbox versions have a bug in MX-Dockmaker whereby, attempting to edit the existing Dock fails with a segfault. An updated package to fix it is in the regular repositories, you only need to install the updates and the issue will be fixed.

    • Absolutely. Whatever you can do with MX full flavour, you can to an extent do with Base. To better explain my “to an extent” comment, all the Base versions were built with a minimal number of apps preinstalled, though I’ve been careful to ensure they’re usable right off the bat by including our default web browser and photo viewer and all of the MX Tools. Nothing’s been removed to create the Base ISO’s the apps just haven’t been installed and that’s why they’re “Base” ISO’s. You install whatever productivity, multimedia or server apps and extensions you desire using a pristine fully featured ISO that has not been tampered with.

      • Thank you , I just installed the Base version I like it more the the full version. The full version seems little bloated to me and I really dont use all the application on it anyways. With the base version I get to install what ever I need with out the need of having to many programs installed that I need

  3. My question is, when it’s updated next year (version 20 to be precise), is there a way to transfer/autoinstall your current ‘settings and aps’, or should one start anew and reinstall everything? If even there were a script that installed what you currently use, without having to do it all one by one, that would be helpful to say the least. The last thing I want to do is constantly have to start over every time a major release comes out. Inquiring newbs want to know.
I use the xfce sysvinit version but whatever’s new and fast, without system.d of course. Maybe I should try fluxbox and start over when 20 comes out. I really have no idea.
Thank You Devs. You guys are the BEST!

    • We follow the Debian release cycle, not the year numbers, so there will be no version 20. We have a public statement to that intent, but I can’t find it using my phone, the UI is too restrictive. To get an impression of what is coming up next, it’s best to keep an eye on the Debian release cycles. We are currently in the Buster release generation and if the next ISO is also based on Buster, there is no need to reinstall because regular updates will pretty much do that for you.
As to your quesrion re: upgrading to the next major release, Debian do not facilitate or encourage upgrading from 1 generation to the next and neither do we, so if our next release is the next Debian generation, then the only path to a new version will be a reinstall. Please also keep in mind these Base ISO’s are my personal respins, they are not what I call full flavour MX.

But Debian does support dist-upgrades. They test this to work with their repositories. MX would also need to test dist-upgrade with their additional repos, and fix any problems before calling it a release day.

  4. A correction for the “gpg” commands that you listed (for “keyserver” and “verify”):

After cutting and pasting the commands you have listed (using terminal in MX-19.3 x64), I received an error to the effect: ‘no command, trying to understand what you mean’.

Surfing the MX forum (https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=92&t=60143&hilit=public+key), I found that the correct syntax is to use a double dash before the options and arguments.

So, you will need to modify the command

    from:

    gpg –keyserver hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 409C71B3BCFDED0A

    to:

    gpg –keyserver hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 409C71B3BCFDED0A

    and from:

    gpg –verify

    to

    gpg –verify

    This worked for me.

    I hope it helps others.

  5. Correction on my comment!

For some strange reason, the double dashes are being converted into a single long dash when posting to this site!!!

Please disregard the previous comment, and just be sure to use double dashes before the words:
    “keyserver”, “recv-keys” and “verify”

  6. Hello. Is there a way to easily get the verification key for MX-19.3.ISO , on source forge there are many don’t know if “base” is the correct one.
Also , checked the entry Torrent Download Option, doesn’t says where to get it.
    Thanks

    • A torrent was never provided because my connection would take over 3 hours to upload a 1.2GB ISO and no-one at the time offered to host it. Verification info is in the post details, you only have to follow what it, and our manual, which is both online and intalled says to do, along with the instructions provided in the post to import my public key.

  7. For full flavour MX-19.3, the link above is one layer too deep. You only need to find the Parent Folder arrow, click that, then go to Final and download the .sig file that matches the ISO you wish to verify.

    • Unfortunately, we can’t do that. Driver updates come from upstream Debian. Please take your issue to the MX Linux Forums where the Devs and other very helpful people who can assist you will see it.

    • Not sure what you’re trying to say. Have you read our Wiki article on Signed ISO files? Here’s an excerpt from that page

      5. Verify the ISO image against the GPG signature file, for example

      gpg --verify antiX-15.1_386-full.iso.sig antiX-15.1_386-full.iso

A genuine iso should show something like this.

gpg: Signature made Fri 26 Feb 2016 05:02:44 PM EST using RSA key ID 4A0C4F9C
gpg: Good signature from “anticapitalista ”
