A newly installed MX-16 shows up in GRUB as "MX GNU/Linux," i.e., without version information. It is possible to use GRUB Customizer, of course, but this should not be necessary. Discussion thread:

can't you just modify the GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR line in /etc/default/grub. that's where we have the background customization now.
