Re: What advice would you give to new people just starting to use Linux?

Get used to reading man pages. Some of them can be pretty intimidating when you're new (tar, for example) but with a little practice they get less scary. Try out different distributions. If you try one and you don't like it, you don't have to keep using it. Be willing to tinker. One of the great thi...

Re: Browser replacement?

I've been using Palemoon because it supports the FF extensions I really want, specifically Pentadactyl. However, it doesn't support all the ones I like, and it's not hard to see that it will become less compatible over time as FF continues to develop in its current direction and Palemoon developers ...

Re: [SOLVED] Adding MX to existing LiLo system

I think first I just changed the subject line of one reply. I didn't realise there was a separate subject for the whole thread.

[SOLVED] Adding MX to existing LiLo system

Installing GRUB2 to the MBR from the MX installer did the trick. It added my older distro automatically.

Re: what was the first linux distro you used

For a summer job in 1998 I had to learn to telnet into a Linux server and edit homepages with vim. I don't know what distro it was. I think it was shortly after that that I tried out Red Hat on my own computer. It wasn't very easy at that point (and I was young enough to be impatient about it). I th...

Re: Adding MX to existing LiLo system

I agree that the Mepis/AntiX/MX installer has the disadvantage of not offering a separate boot partition, but that is a minor snag. Agreed, it's pretty minor. Just means I need to learn something about a bootloader other than LiLO. If you install MX on new partition(s), grub will pick up your exist...

Re: Adding MX to existing LiLo system

You could install grub to the mx root partiton (our installer gives you that option) then setup lilo to chain load to it, similar to the way windows is handled. I don't know how to configure lilo but I imagine it's fairly easy to set up a chainload. I hadn't thought of that. According to this it mi...

Re: Adding MX to existing LiLo system

Hi: So, if I install MX to, say, dev/sda5, with GRUB2 installed to the MBR (I know technically GPT doesn't have an MBR in the same sense, but the other option is to install it to /root), GRUB would handle booting, and I could then, from within MX, add the relevant entry to GRUB for the older system,...
