Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

That's fine fehlix. Not going anywhere for the moment so I can test your fixes on my iMac.

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

I have deleted MX from my iMac in order to test your new version 18.1. It was working well otherwise; maybe slow updates, but I was used to Arch on the bleeding edge. Install of 18.1 behaves the same way as before, giving me errors before getting to the grub menu error: unknown filesystem error: you...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

fehlix: Sorry, just realised I didn't give you the result of one of those grub commands.
It might have been important so here it is:
echo $root: hd0

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

.. and also try this ... on the grub command line do all three commands : search --set=root --file /cdrom.ico set prefix="($root)/boot/grub" configfile $prefix/grub.cfg after the last commad you shall see the MX Menu again, and do now try to start MX 18 from the menu. Good luck :puppy: That worked!...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

How did you created the USB stick from the ISO?
I first did dd of the new iso file onto USB from Arch and tested it. Then I reformatted the USB (on mac), copied the new iso to macbook pro 13 and used balenaEtcher to write the stick. Then I tested the result. Same in both cases.

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

After some digging I might have an idea of what one of the messages means - may not be what stops booting. I get the message "unknown filesystem" when trying to boot. In the grub command line I can do ls of filesystems and a partition on my hard disk stands out as unrecognised. It is sda4, which is ...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

Thanks for the info fehlix. I had some trouble getting a clean xd3 file from dropbox but I have one now. xdelta3 processed the iso and I tried booting. The result was slightly different. I still got "unknown filesystem" but this time it said "error: you must load the kernel first" instead of "unalig...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

xdelta3 will not run with that command. I have downloaded MX-18_x64.iso and checked it has the correct md5sum. When I do the xdelta command, on Arch linux, I get xdelta3: secondary compression lzma xdelta3: not a VCDIFF input: XD3_INVALID_INPUT xdelta3: normally this indicates that the source file i...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

As far as I can tell the macbook pro 15inch 2013 has 64-bit UEFI. The boot ROM is up to date using apple's eficheck and the SMC version is also good. Using IOReg to display the IODeviceTree also says ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi | | "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64"> Don't know any other way...

Re: Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

fehlix and Richard: I put MX-18 on a brand new USB stick using balenaEtcher. Copying stick-to-stick using MX-Live-USB-Maker wouldn't work on my macbook pro (only two USB-C ports and I need to use them for mouse and keyboard when MX-Live booted). I have no other means of doing the write to USB (excep...
