Mepis 8.5 working on Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop (Intel Graphics i845GL)

I installed Mepis 8.5.0.3 onto a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop (Intel Graphics i845GL) this weekend, encountering a strange issue. Ubuntu Lucid, Gentoo, Slackware and Fedora all gave exactly the same issue. Antix worked fine with iceWM, but adding KDE4 failed too. There's this old thread under M8.5 Beta...

Can anyone tell me how I can select what type of menu is available when you click the mousewheel? In Mepis 7 I used it as a custom quick launch and would like to do that again If I understand correctly, you want middle-click to launch krunner i.e. behaving as if you had used the Key combo Alt+F2. I...

Using Kdialog

I've been looking at Kdialog recently. I'll just post a few bits and pieces re: the possibilities. Let's take konsole first. You can use it to display files nicely under a GUI i.e. $ dmesg | kdialog --textbox /dev/stdin 1000 500 $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | kdialog --textbox /dev/stdin 1000 500 Or use...

Sounds easy, but it's valid only for Firefox, what about people who use Opera... OK, Opera - maybe not so intuitive ... but here goes 1) Close Opera 2) Konsole $ kdesu kwrite /usr/share/opera/defaults/webmailproviders.ini 3) Add here after Yandex/Fast/Operawebmail/Mail.ru (leaving the usual blank l...

I think Gmail nowadays is an existing option with FF 3.5.2 ~ 3.7pre (perhaps recently added) under
FF > Edit > Preferences > Applications > mailto > Dropdown box > Use Gmail
Simpler way?

@ Adrian (or any other CLI adherents) Have you ever tried fish (interactive shell with loads of goodies on top of bash / konsole). If not, you can install with apt-get install fish (or with aptitude) and auto-activate fish shell by putting in .bashrc as the last line if [ $SHELL == /bin/bash ]; then...

Tracking your time behind the keyboard

Want to track how you spend your time behind the keyboard? You can easily set up a Cron job to pop-up a regular konsole window asking "What are you doing at this moment?" and you just type whatever you're doing, which is saved to a file. Basically it's taken from this old web post http://www.termina...

How about integrating underneath the unpacked iso? Like under the iso file which unpacks to /wherever/mepis/ (under the liveusb environment) creating or writing a dynamic .../mepis/changes directory (assuming it's writeable) ... and then sourcing the persistant changes from there with some sort of b...

Convert .txt files to a nice printable format

Want to print a *.txt file created with kwrite, but it doesn't look good when printed? Try enscript: i.e. to convert myfile.txt to myfile.ps - here -f is font, with msttcorefonts installed, can have -f Arial 10, -f Times-Roman 10 etc (or even Purisa via ttf-thai-tlwg etc), then $ enscript --word-wra...

Guarddog was updated recently, and many protocols previously disabled, were enabled by Warren. To disable port 445: Alt+F2 > guarddog > Give root passwd Click Protocol tab and then under Internet > network (expand it) / (also via local >network) and blank the netbios checkbox (2x click) and apply. I...
