[SOLVED] Cannot install MX-18 (HP Laptop 15-bw022la)

#1

Post by megatotoro » Wed Jan 02, 2019 11:09 pm

MX boots fine. However, when I log in, the wi-fi is not active and after some minutes of using the system, it freezes to the point that I have to press the power button to shut down. I've tried to boot from USB and DVD with the same results. Other distros have had worse luck, by the way.

Processor: APU AMD Dual-Core A6-9220 64 bits.
AMD Radeon R4 (graphics)

That's as far as I can tell concerning the hardware.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kudos on finding a solution! IIUC, that CPU was announced in 2016 so the machine can't be that old. I'm curious to find out why MX-18 had such problems while antiX-17.3.1 worked fine. If you get a chance, could you post the output of "inxi -F" so the experts here can have a go at trying to figure out what went wrong?

My wild guess is there was a problem running the 4.19 kernel on your hardware. If you want MX-18 you could try installing MX-17 (or running it live) and see if that is stable. If so then it will upgrade to an MX-18 system (when you upgrade the software) but keep the older kernel. This is possible because the Debian repos we use didn't change between MX-17 and MX-18.

@Bitjam,

Sure; I'll try MX-17 later. I didn't happen to have any iso available at the moment. I'll download it and try it soon.

This is the result of inxi -F (running XFCE):

Any help will be welcome, especially with the network because since Wi-fi is not available, I am using a USB wifi network adapter right now.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I had to remove the "SOLVED" mark because when I tried to run Steam, Conky showed a 72% of CPU usage before the laptop froze. Again, I had to use a hard reboot. :(

About the internal wi-fi:

Code: Select all

Device-2: Realtek driver: N/A
That's really weird that it doesn't show anything. Does it show up in the output of "lspci"?

A wifi solution is posted here Realtek Semiconductor RTL8723DE Device d723 issue. It involves building an rtlwifi_new driver from this git repo.

Hi BitJam,
I tried the first solution and rebooted, but it was not effective. The second one gave me this:

Code: Select all

I'm going to reboot to see if there's any change. Thanks for your help.

Maybe Stevo can help you with the kernel stuff. He is a whiz. If it works then we might want to add it to our kernels or something. I wonder if it has already been added to the main branch of Linux?

Yes, Stevo has also helped me in the past with issues I thought unsolvable. I don't really know if the solution was implemented in the new Linux kernel. I tried Manjaro which, I understand, runs the latest kernel but was not as effective as MX-18. Then, antiX has been the one that has worked best on this laptop. I didn't check if antiX Hellen Keller runs a newer or older kernel than MX-18, though.
