When does MX 19 will be released?

#1

Post by joejac » Wed May 29, 2019 7:52 pm

Hello,
First congratulations! MX Linux is No. 1 :number1: in Distrowatch but by far!

I need to upgrade my MX Linux, but I would like to know if it is best to wait until MX-19 is released, so my question: When does MX 19 will be released?
Thanks and regards
joejac

Sometime after Debian Buster is released (end of year maybe?), I would advise against waiting

Hello asqwerth
I have MX-16 in my Desktop
Yesterday I got the part that was damaged from my laptop, and after 2 years I turned it on, the laptop has MX15
Does anybody know if a rolling MX Linux is foreseen for the future?
Regards

Rolling between major debian versions is not likely

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-18.3
lenovo s21e - antiX-19 beta 2 (live-USB)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Just another user chiming in saying that MX is built on a base of Debian stable. Debian is not a rolling distribution. This is a major contributor to MX's stability. You can have rolling, or stable. Must pick one. Stable is golden.

joejac, an attempt to upgrade from MX15/16, to MX19, is to jump 2 whole Debian releases (Jessie to Stretch to the eventual Buster).

Even if MX was a rolling release, which it is not, this is like someone not updating a rolling installation for at least 1 whole year, and then trying to install 1 year's worth of upgrades and packages all at once. That is not recommended at all even in rolling releases.

MX15/16's support ends middle of next year (2020). What you can do is install MX18.3 over your MX15/16 install but choose to preserve /home in the installer option. That will preserve your config settings for various programs you were using in MX15/16, although you may need to (re)install a program itself in MX18.3 if it doesn't come preinstalled in the MX18.3 iso.

MX18.3's support will probably be until around 2022 so unless you are hankering after the latest and greatest updates (which I doubt since you haven't upgraded this install for a long time), there is no need to wait for MX19. MX18 is very usable for most people.

Also, for machines that you don't often have time to upgrade, why would you want to install a rolling distro? Like I said, it's not recommended to go months, let alone years, between upgrades of rolling releases.

Go with MX 18.3. It was just released, and is better supported than MX 16. MX 19 is still in the very early stages of development; we don't even have any repos set up for it yet, and we are still looking at some major decisions on how to handle the systemd/no systemd question.
