error when adding the system76 ppa

#1

Post by eleach » Tue Aug 13, 2019 5:03 pm

I would like to add the system76 drivers ppa as described here:

https://support.system76.com/articles/system76-driver/

but am getting an error in synaptic:

http://ppa:system76-dev/stable/

Failed to fetch http://ppa/stable/dists/system76/InRelease Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Please let me know if there is another way to add this PPA.

Thanks, Ed

MX is based on Debian not Ubuntu. Installing packages from an Ubuntu PPA is likely to create dependency issues and a borked install.

But that particular error is usually a misconfiguration at the PPA or your system's proxy settings.

Since the System76 isn't browseable I have no idea what the specific issue is. You might ask System76 but they would probably just tell you their PPA is for Ubuntu only.

Oh, turns out I was mistaken. It is browseable, you just had the entry wrong.
If you're determined to do this, the closest match to MX-17/18 would be this entry (Bionic has a newer libc6).
Still risky. If you break it you get to keep all the pieces.

Code: Select all

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/system76-dev/stable/ubuntu/ xenial main

Methinks this is a really BAD idea.... :lipsrsealed:

Edit: Better to try getting the apps you want as appimages or flatpaks. I don't recommend snaps, personally. You can also request having the apps you want be added to the MX repos.
