Deleted kernels still in grub new ones not (SOLVED)

#1

Post by JBoman » Sat Aug 24, 2019 1:03 pm

A while back I installed a couple of RT kernels for testing with LinuxEMC and no longer need them so removed them with Synaptic a few days ago and did update-grub. I also installed the same version of the kernels that are not RT (real-time) kernels and did update-grub. However after several reboots the real time kernels that were removed still show up in grub and the not real time kernels I installed do not show up in grub. Any pointers for what I need to do to correct this is appreciated. Jerry

If MX would be the only installed system
update-grub
generates menu entries for all kernel found within /boot.
So perhaps check /boot.
If other installed linux's provide the grub-menu,
you either need to boot into the other linux and generate the grub menu there too,
or alternatively make sure the current installed grub is pointing
to the right grub-loader by
reinstalling into MBR's:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo grub-install /dev/sdb

I think the conflict may be with an install of Debian 9 on drive sdb and the grub that was created with its install; I think that because it is the version of grub that always starts at bootup. There have been newer installs of systems on sda but the same grub has remained persistant from sdb. I wonder if I reinstall grub to first partition ind sda if that will correct the problem? ... yes fehlix thats what I'm thinking
