Any xfce specific MX tools will not work well, if at all, with Mate. Probably a lot will... a Mate user will have to tell you which tools do not. You will need to find a Mate theme that meets your criteria. It needs to be gtk3 based. Here's a place to start your search: https://www.mate-look.org/

Well, the default MX dark theme is Arc-Dark.

That should work well with MATE, since it's a versatile theme that has all the necessary bits and bobs for cinnamon, mate, openbox, xfce, gnome3, etc. Metacity should be the MATE-specific parts of the Arc theme.

You just can't apply said theme with MX Tweak, because that is a very XFCE-centric tool. Same with Menu Editor, which I believe is to tweak the xfce/whisker menu.

But if you install MATE, you'll have the MATE Control Centre and you can change the themes from within it.

Also note that installing MATE from backports gets you a slightly more recent version (1.20 i/o 1.16)

How to install MATE in MX?

1. open MX Packageinstaller >> Popular Apps tab.

2. Go to the Desktop Environments category, tick the checkbox for MATE, install it.
