Post by vvm » Sun May 19, 2019 5:23 am

He Mate,
sometimes my PC with MX 18.1 is frozen:

CPU=100%

Actual there are 4 Programms active:
1. Word (1 Document)
2. FileManager (1 Window)
3. Pinta (1 Window with 1 Document)
4 Firefox with 7 Tabs.

PC has a Memory 8GB.

The GK208 line of nvidia cards has been problematic with the nouveau driver which your system info shows you are using.
I also have a GK208 type of card (730 instead of 710) which will usually crash in under an hour running nouveau but is rock stable with the proprietary driver.

I would strongly recommend using the nvidia driver installer tool in MX-Tools to install the proprietary driver.

Another possibility is to try the modesetting driver built into the kernel which supposedly works better than nouveau for that chipset, but I haven't actually tried that here.
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

Yes, but it was because ASUS put a CPU powersaver setting in the BIOS that causes random hard freezes. All I had to is to disable it. I forgot exactly what that useless powersaver is called.
I am command line illiterate. :confused:
