Pushbullet extension for Google Chrome. I think Firefox also can also use it.

Thank you for your reply. I don't think that is what I am looking for. I am after something like Telegram to send sms messages using my phone number. The trouble there is that the recipient requires the Telegram app as well to receive the messages. What I was looking for was sending sms messages from my desktop, sync'd with my iphone.

Many years ago I enquired about doing the same with iPrimus, it was a 'feature' they had to turn on for the relevant internet account, which of course at the time they were quite happy to charge extra for.
Nowdays I have no idea what's required to do that, perhaps ask Telstra?

There used to be websites that could send free SMS messages. I don't know if they still exist or not though as I use Viber, and the few people that I send a lot of texts to also have Viber.

Perhaps FB/Messenger could provide a solution but generally speaking, spoofing a phone ID and generating a text is something reserved for nickel magnates and marketers right? But, since Messenger and regular text can be handled by the same app on a smart phone and become somewhat indistinguishable to users in a practical sense, that is where I would suggest looking at least. Good luck

Search "email to SMS" and you'll find solutions.
TextMagic seems to be a popular one.

Gammu and gnoki are in the stable repo. One of them might be able to send/receive SMS messages as I see they both have an SMS daemon available for them. You may need to have your mobile connected as I think they use it as a GSM modem.
https://www.developershome.com/sms/freeLibForSMS.asp
They're both command-line tools though. (That website has several pages about sending and receiving SMS from PCs and would be worth exploring.)

Edit: it seems that many mobile carriers have email-to-SMS gateways available to allow sending SMS messages from a computer through email:
https://www.opentextingonline.com/emailtotext.aspx
So in Australia you can send messages to Optus subscribers by sending email to 0##########@optusmobile.com.au and to Telstra customers by sending to ##########@online.telstra.com.au (replacing the #s with their mobile numbers.)

Kannel is also in the stable repo; https://www.kannel.org/ though not the latest version.

Google's Android SMS app called Messages has web interface, the same as Telegram and WhatsApp. Similar principle. You connect/sync your phone with web interface by scanning QR code...
Maybe that works just for their RCS messages, but I think it could work for plain SMS texts as well. (I didn't try it myself). Try it out.
