Did you un-comment the deb-multimedia repo?

If you want to post your sources.list file we can see what's wrong.

It's the same as in kmathern's link. Was I supposed to change it?

If the DVD player is going CLUNK!...CLUNK!...CLUNK!, it's junk. Heck, Newegg.com sometimes has NEW bare burners in IDE or SATA3 on sale for $20.00 with free shipping. I try to keep a couple of each at home, just-in-case.

I fix some of the computers for the people at church. Most are getting OLD computers from their kids and grand-kids to use. I always have fun explaining WHY the computer needs to be secured so they don't end up with all "those porn sites popping up". For a free meal (that I didn't have to cook), it's worth the aggravation of cleaning off a computer.

Open Synaptic
Click the Settings Menu
Click Preferences
Click the Distribution Tab
Click the Prefer versions from: Radio Button
The drop-down should show you the choices available (as per the choices you've made)

Libdvdcss2 won't help with the drive or the MEPIS DVD problems--it handles commercial DVD decryption, and that's all it does. Does it do the CLUNK with any other disks?

Most of the time for me when the drive tries to open but does not, making that clunky sound, it is because the drive is misaligned in the case. This generally happens when I am installing the drive with both case sides off as it allows the case to twist more. However I have had it with a brand new store bought system... especially the clip together type cases. other times it is just because the case side screws are left out.... Anyway to fix it I normally stand the case on a flat table, take the case sides off, loosen the drive screws, wiggle the drive with my finger so it sits loosely, tighten the screws, try the tray. If it works put the case sides on, if not try again.
