A possible solution has been posted on the antiX-forum by eugen-b.
adding a line to conkyrc

Code: Select all

own_window_type desktop
or

Code: Select all

own_window_type override
stops the flashing.
I was mistaken before. Both of these added to .conkyrc eliminate the flashing panel artifact. I previously used the new conky 1.10 syntax and it did not work. But using the syntax exactly as shown above, works fine.

I'm sorry I misunderstood.
Actually, it was a new finding. Previously, I did not have two terminals open. And, I was very surprised that closing the terminal (2nd terminal) that launched conky did't make the flashing item go away. Closing the 1st terminal (which did not launch conky but was only used for the cpid lines) made the flashing item go away.

However, I then confirmed that both of the following work when used in .conkyrc with the syntax exactly as shown:

Code: Select all

own_window_type desktop
own_window_type override
"own_window_type normal" is the default. Arrgh! I'm running the newer version of conky on my other desktop machine and I was too smart for my own britches.

Actually I don't understand all this excitement in an alpha with a flashing Conky. If you want to read please:
own_window
Boolean, create own window to draw?
own_window_type
if own_window is yes,
you may specify type normal, desktop, dock, panel or override (default: normal). Desktop windows are special windows that have no window decorations; are always visible on your desktop; do not appear in your pager or taskbar; and are sticky across all workspaces. Panel windows reserve space along a desktop edge, just like panels and taskbars, preventing maximized windows from overlapping them. The edge is chosen based on the alignment option. Override windows are not under the control of the window manager. Hints are ignored. This type of window can be useful for certain situations.
Quelle

The original code (.conkyrc) has only this entry:

Code: Select all

own_window yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar
Therefore, the user has the following correction options in JWM / IceWM:

Code: Select all

#(comment out) of own_window yes
or
own_window no #yes
But he might lose his beloved desktop symbols.
So it will make more sense to add an override entry to the .conkyrc:

Code: Select all

own_window yes
own_window_type override
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar

The most important thing at the end of this correction,
unsubscribe and re-register is duty!

It's not the conky display that flashes. It's an item on the panel's (task bar's) window list that flashes for attention. There is no excitement. It's just attention to the primary purpose for alpha releases, and that's identifying problems.

The vim editor seems to be intermittently broken. I usually run it as root on the live system.

Today I've run into two problems. The first was it was unable to write to files under /live/boot-dev/ (the main live-usb partition). This happened when the live-usb was encrypted but other boots with the same live-usb did not have this problem. On the one boot that had the problem it was consistent and restarting vim did not help.

The other problem was that vim got confused and was unable to search for strings. I've seen this before (in antiX-19a*, I think). It says the string is not found even though it exists in the file. Restarting vim fixes the problem at least temporarily.

I worked around the first problem by copying the file I wanted to edit elsewhere. Edit it there and then copy it back. The 2nd problem is worked around by quitting and restarting vim but it can be confusing.

Going from antiX-17.1 to antiX-19.2a, the versions of vim-tiny and vim-common changed from 2:8.0.0197-4+deb9u to 2:8.1.0875-2. I used ldd to look at the libraries and they were mostly they same. It's possible that some of these problems existed in the previous version(s) of vim and I had ignored or overlooked them.

IMO these various intermittent problems may indicate a more serious underlying problem and the version of vim in antiX-19.a2 may be unreliable.
Will I cry when it's all over?
When I die will I see Heaven?

On my MX installs, including live-usb versions, I've replaced vim-tiny with the full vim package. I can't live with the limitations of vim-tiny. Doing that replacement would help troubleshoot the source of the problems you've experienced.

Could not do a UEFI install of antiX-19-a2_x64 had no problem with Antix-17.4.1 - see image of hard drive. I will reinstall tomorrow to recheck.

When I first boot up, conky is flashing in panel, left click mouse and it goes away, never to be seen again until next reboot.

Trying to update via Synaptic: The repository 'http://la.mxrepo.com/antix/buster buster Release' does not have a Release file. <-- do I need to change repo?
Would like to see Orage Calendar added to antiX's package installer list.

Tried to install Kernel 64 bit - 5.09 saw a number of errors flash on screen as it scrolled downward, but it finished.
Rebooted, and came up in text. Used startx and lots of errors told me it was not going to a graphical interface.

During boot chose the default kernel and system booted - time for another install of antiX-19-a2

Still could not do a UEFI Install had two choices on choosing boot -
from USB
From UIEF part 2

Tried both
from UEFi part 2 cursor just stayed static on screen for 30 minutes. <--believe slow set up happened on first UEFI install but it did not take 30 minutes
from USB booted up quickly after grub on root was installed, I used boot repair to move boot to ESP. On reboot system was lighting fast, producing sign-in box almost instantly.

Went to Package installer:
Could not install Google Chrome, nor GIMP
Used Firefox and downloaded Google Chrome and then used GDebi Package installer and discovered a dependence was missing (Font) closed GDebi and tried to do an aptget for that font that failed.

Have returned to Antix-17.4.1 as antiX-19-a2 became unusable for me on new installs. Will wait for antiX-19-a3 to try again...

I've just been testing a2 from a live USB. I have the same issue as with a1, just FYI: slim/X11 fail to start at boot. However, I've discovered that after the 3-minute wait for the black screen to go away and give me a console login prompt, if I log in as root then run slim the GUI/WM starts and behaves normally. At that point I'm able to log out, then get the slim GUI login screen where I can log in as demo, and the GUI and WM all start and run as the unprivileged user too. I'm thinking it's an issue with antiX 19 vs. my video card. (antiX 17.4 boots up fine on the same system btw.)

Also, after slim starts and the desktop appears, after the conky starts I have a flashing whatchamacallit for the conky in the panel as though it's an app that I'm running (which it technically is) and when I click on it, the panel item for the conky disappears. Never mind, this is the "flashing conky" that's already been mentioned by others.

BTW I have perst_all on the live USB. I ran sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade then remastered and rebooted and have the same behavior re: slim and X11. Also, thinking about it more, it can't be a problem with my GPU and X11 because it works later after I've logged in at the console. It's only affecting X starting prior to a (either root, or demo followed by su) login, so it's something about my system and that stage in init.
