[RESOLVED] repair of booting into XFCE4-desktop

#1

Post by cinclus » Thu Jun 13, 2019 8:04 am

I am using two different MX18 local installations one of which (the completely working one) I can use to repair the other by chrooting into it.
Network is available in the choot environment. Building a kernel is possible in the chroot environment too.

Booting directly into the defective installation ends with dropping into a terminal login prompt with plymouth error. Trying to startx after login fails with a visible mouse-cursor on an otherwise empty desktop.

Chrooting into this defective installation from the other installation works. xserver-xorg-video-intel packages seem to be in place on the defective installation(?).

Now my question:

what are the necessary steps to repair the start into the desktop?

Any hints highly appreciated.

Did you try to install an nvidia driver recently on that OS by any chance ?
Please post the result of "system quick info"

What I would start with:
Select the installation in the grub menu.
Hit "e" and remove "splash" (and "quiet") in the "linux" grub command line and see if or what difference that makes.

My reasoning was to start with the plymouth error you mentioned.
Removing splash from the kernel line should disable plymouth according to some sources.
And get rid of the plymouth error I suppose.
Here in the forum "nosplash" is mentioned to do this. And elsewhere "noplymouth".
Don't know if these are equivalent.

removing "splash" won't do it. plymouth looks for the "nosplash" parameter to trip out from loading.

you can also just disable plymouth (update-rc.d plymouth disable)

Are you perhaps sharing the home folder between these 2 installs ?
Are you getting the graphical login screen in the "faulty" system, or no X-windows at all ?
If so, perhaps /var/log/Xorg.0.log can show what goes wrong ...

No. They are completely separate.

no X-windows

Re: repair of booting into XFCE4-desktop

Have you tried booting with "nosplash" as suggested ?

Is one of you installs using the intel modesetting and the other the intel driver ? Do you remember adjusting that (via MX-tweak) ?
If that is the case there would a difference in the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folders ...
Anyway I must say both drivers are supposed to work and i am running out of ideas..
