Have you tried booting with "nosplash" as suggested ?
Yes, but nothing changes. Only the plymouth error disappears as expected.
Is one of you installs using the intel modesetting and the other the intel driver ? Do you remember adjusting that (via MX-tweak) ?
I only used the intel driver on both installs. No changes. The problems started on the faulty system with my trying to solve package conflicts. As far I can see I have repaired the package conflicts.
If that is the case there would a difference in the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folders ...
... but as I have added the Xorg.0.log of the working system you may get the critical information from it?

it appears they are both using modesetting (the default IIRC)
The "faulty" one dies saying "Server zapped. Shutting down" - i suppose when you kill your startx with a Ctrl-C,
whereas the working one gets all sorts of EDID details from the monitor (but i have no idea why this does not happen for the other MX).
Sorry, I am no X-guru and have run out of checks i'd perform myself.

@cinclus
If you want to try, if the intel driver makes a difference to the modesetting one, this is what the
20-intel.conf
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ looks like when the intel driver is in use:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
# Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" #could also use the default "sna"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

I got the xserver to work again by tinkering with some commands (in the shown order).
Note: the re-install of xfc4 failed at first several times.

Code: Select all

apt-get install --reinstall lightdm
apt-get install desktop-base
apt-get install xfce4
apt-get purge xfce4-settings
apt-get purge xfce4-panel
apt-get purge xfdesktop4
apt-get purge thunar
apt-get purge xfce4-session
apt-get install xfce4
apt-get -f install
apt autoremove
apt-get install xfce4
The automatic network configuration does not yet work again. Only in the chroot-environment with manual setting of the DNS.

And I have to find out how to get back the MX additions to the desktop.

By comparing with meld the package-lists of both installs generated by
aptitude search '~i!~M' -F '%p'
I found out that about 200(!) packages were missing on the faulty install.

After installing them - NB!: in the chroot environment - the network worked again.

Now the only thing I didn't find out is how get back the whisker menu.

Any advice?

whiskermenu is panel plugin, so as long as the package is installed, you should be able to add it back to the panel thru the panel preferencs -> add item dialog.

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-18.3
lenovo s21e - antiX-19 beta 2 (live-USB)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Thanks. The panel plugin was not yet in place. As a guide through the panel preference settings I used screenshots of the configuration of the working install.
