We're already there! 3743 v. 3708.

But remember, fame can be ephemeral. We don't develop MX for the mouse clicks, nice as it is to see them. Some new kid in town will have a good release and we'll drift back in the popularity poll.
We'll just keep putting out an attractive, flexible "It Just Works" distribution - the kind we want to use ourselves - with a friendly helpful forum and we'll be just fine whatever the DW hits are.

Maybe we need a slave whispering in our ears, as in the parade for victorious generals in ancient Rome, "Remember that you are mortal."

George S. Patton:
"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.”

I may have missed a posting on this, but has anyone tracked download patterns from the various mirrors to see what the download trends looks like? They could provide some insight into when the flood of new users might appear here. ;)
@manyroads: one mirror has stat page for MX in Vietnam:
https://mirror.freedif.org/Stats/
-->Click MXLinux.html
-->there is a steady trend upwards, but distinct users still under 1000 since the mirror went up 1.5 months ago. I understand that it's not our major market (like USA, Canada, UK due to historical origin from Mepis), but it's modest compared to the others in this stat directory and as part of overall, even less popular ones like Salix, Kaos, Sabayon, Parabola... I don't mention Lite, Mint, Antegros, Manjaro.

Many mirrors mentioned they may enable/ install some stat tools for us, I may look into it later more closely. We can enable it for our African mirror immediately (same tool goAccess as in VN), would be interesting to see what happens there

Do you think that's small number? Hey, soruceforge numbers on the day of release are not much more than 2000...

Yesterday Distrowatch had MX #1 for the past 30 days by a pretty good margin. I know it's a popularity contest, but I do think it gives a good snapshot of overall popularity. Ubuntu ruled for years until the falling out with Gnome during the Gnome 3 release, and I don't think it ever fully recovered. Mint took 1st place because of MATE and Cinnamon DE's as they proved more popular than the Unity DE of Ubuntu and stayed in 1st a long time. I think Ubuntu 18.04 and Mint 19 based upon it was a severe hit to both with kernel bugs from Ubuntu, and that on a supposed stable release. MX has become so good that it naturally rose to the top. I suspect we will soon see the 6th month average having MX as #1.

Six months ago our 6-month average was 1180. It has more than doubled to 2476. Three months ago our 3-month average was 1905. It has risen to 3052.

Code: Select all

Now 3 mo 6 mo 1 yr
|---------------|---------------|-------------------------------|
| 3052 | 1905 | 1108 |
|_______________|_______________|_______________________________|
While some of our rise in popularity is due to the recent MX-18 release, there was already a strong rising trend. In addition, the MX-18 release was 3 weeks ago yet our popularity is continuing to rise. We seem to have attained critical MX.
