It wasn't so I installed it, remastered, rebooted. Had the same issue with slim not starting at boot. Logged in as demo at the console login prompt, ran sudo slim, GUI environment started.

/var/log/ConsoleKit/history:

I don't see any other logfiles that contain any pertinent info. Let me know if you want me to try anything else or if there's other information that would be useful. Maybe instead of starting slim after logging in I should just let it fail then save the logfiles from the failed state and post their contents?

I've been unable to prevent the i915 driver from loading on the live system. "blacklist=i915" does not work nor does "nomodeset" nor even "i915.modeset=0".

I've seen this problem in the past where udev seems to ignore blacklisting or at least blacklisting of video drivers. If we can't blacklist video drivers and if they ignore "nomodeset" then this breaks all of our safe video stuff on the live system. It ensures that you will get a blank screen on a system that has such a driver when "safe video" is selected. **sigh**

FWIW, here is the inxi -F output from antiX-17.4:

I've been unable to prevent the i915 driver from loading on the live system. "blacklist=i915" does not work nor does "nomodeset" nor even "i915.modeset=0".

I've seen this problem in the past where udev seems to ignore blacklisting or at least blacklisting of video drivers. If we can't blacklist video drivers and if they ignore "nomodeset" then this breaks all of our safe video stuff on the live system. It ensures that you will get a blank screen on a system that has such a driver when "safe video" is selected. **sigh**

FWIW, here is the inxi -F output from antiX-17.4:

what is supposed to load for a kernel driver if you blacklist i915?

attached is my inxi and lsmod info for failsafe.

during boot there is still information printed by the live initrd before udev launches that i915 is found.

Good question. If a KMS driver is not found and there is no xorg.conf but there is a framebuffer then the default fallback for X is fbdev. The default used to be vesa. At least for legacy booting fbdev sucks because the we set the default framebuffer resolution to 1024x768 and it cannot be changed by the user after they boot.

What we do in live-init is we try to see if there is a KMS driver for the hardware. If not, then we make an xorg.conf that specifies the vesa driver so we are not stuck with fbdev. We do a similar thing in safe video mode but we also use "nomodeset" that is supposed to prevent KMS drivers from loading.

Were you able to get to X? It looks like it and it looks like the vesa driver is being used so maybe "nomodeset" is behaving differently than in the past.

When I boot legacy, the screen jumps around when udev runs and a KMS driver gets loaded because it changes the console framebuffer. Normally, using "nomodeset" prevents this from happening but I was not able to prevent it on antiX-19.a2. I will try safe video and see if it works. I ran into the problem of i915 always loading when I was trying to get rid of the visual glitches during start up. It frustrates me when udev ignores blacklisting and the drivers (or whatever) ignore "nomodeset". I remember having this problem a few years ago too.

I think that is my live-init script saying it found hardware that will cause the i915 module to be loaded. You can take a look in /var/log/live/live-init.log(.color) and also in /root/Live-usb-storage/live-logs/live-init.log(.color). That 2nd location is new. It automatically saves some of the log files across shutdowns.

On my Acer ES1-511 laptop I get the black screen of death when udev runs whether I am booting into runlevel 3 or runlevel 5. I was able to get to the command line when I used safe video mode but I was unable to get graphics to work even after nuking /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I'm busy now but I can investigate more later.
