nvidia driver install recovery

You install the stock Nvidia driver on your system using MX Tools > Nvidia driver installer, but one of two situations arises:

  • Failure: after a restart you end up with a blinking cursor and no desktop
  • Disappointment: it works, but you change your mind for one reason or another and want to return

  • On the blinking cursor screen, hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to a console
  • First, just try removing any exisiting /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
  • Then reboot with sudo reboot
  • If just removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file doesn’t work, you can remove the nvidia drivers and return to using the open source drivers.
  • On the blinking cursor screen, hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to a console
  • Type: sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
  • Type: sudo reboot

The large number of files left behind can be removed using Synaptic or by pressing F4 and entering: sudo apt autoremove. Be sure to look the list over before committing to the removal.

The system boots to the desktop but something is not satisfactory for one reason or another. In some cases it may be possible to improve the situation.

Example: your screen resolution may be low and can’t be increased

Hardware check after rebooting: press F4 and enter: inxi -G. Example output:

Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GK107GL [Quadro K420]
driver: N/A Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: nouveau,vesa
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting resolution: 1024×768~61Hz
OpenGL: renderer: N/A v: N/A

Possible fix: Run MX Tools > Nvidia driver installer again but this time choose the driver from the MX Test Repo. After rebooting, press F4 again and enter inxi -G to check for the driver. Example output:

Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GK107GL [Quadro K420] driver: nvidia v: 418.74 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: nvidia resolution: 2560×1440~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Quadro K420/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 418.74

This is what we want: the Nvidia driver shows up installed and the resolution is adequate.

If it works but you do not wish to keep it for one reason or another, follow the procedure under Failure above.

  1. Thank you!
    Thank you!
    Thank you!

But why Nvidia driver was not installed during the installation?
    I re-installed OS many times.
    I cannot find out.
I tried kernel: 5.2.x , 4.1x. all have the same problem.

  2. Same problem here with nvidia drivers. Tried all three different kernels. Rebooted to black screen.
Please fix! Luckily i had my live usb was able to chroot.

  3. Hello, i have a problem with the installator itself, it closes after this message :

    Pilote nécessaire:nvidia-driver nvidia-driver 450.80.02-1~mx19+1
    2 ERREUR: Argument inconnu: nvidia

i tried many times many possibilities, even the offline method.. it always said that, maybie just a simple script mistake?

      1.sudo apt-get install gdm3
      2.sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
3.В открывшемся окне выберите нужный менеджер(gdm3)
      4.sudo reboot

      • Ещё поправка, на чёрном экране не прокатит, нужно делать или сразу после установки ос, или после действий -гибернация-выход.
