HELP: AMD/ATI and Nvidia installers

NOTE: In MX17, support for AMD/ATI FGLRX drivers has been removed as they are no longer developed. The tool still works for NVIDIA drivers.

Graphic drivers can be extremely annoying to install, with many steps and multiple reboots. This MX Tool supplies a pain-free method of installing either AMD/ATI or Nvidia drivers. Since the same code source (ddm-mx) is used for both cards, they are treated here together in spite of the fact they have separate icons on the MX Tools dashboard.

Nvidia installer determining that there is no need to proceed.

The program first detects the graphics card, then determines the optimal driver. One click initiates the install process, which usually takes a few minutes.

  1. In MX-19 there’s an issue with the legacy 340 driver loading incorrect OpenGL libraries so many apps won’t work: glxgears, VLC and others. Running inxi -G shows N/A for the OpenGL bindings. The solution is to open a terminal then run

    sudo mv /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.bac && sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia/legacy-340xx/libglx.so.340.107 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

    to force the Nvidia 340.xx driver to load its own GL library rather than the generic one in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions. This is valid until such time as Debian finds a solution that they can apply to their Nvidia 340 driver packages.

    Any updates on MX Linux 19.1/19.2/19..x to support AMD drivers ?

    RX 580 does not work correctly with 7D2D 18.x (Native)
    or Insurgency (2004) (Native) due to shader/texture issues
    using the free built in drivers (Mesa 19.3.3/LLVM 0.0.1/Kernal 5.4.0-3)

    Please offer a way to swap from
    * AMD Opensource/”FREE” driver
    * over to the AMD “free”/commerical/closed source driver
    via a script or MX AMD installer tool in 2020
