Xfce menus

<Menus are complicated in Xfce, so this slightly edited post by ToZ on the Xfce Forum is very helpful>

———

There are 3 places where the xfce-applications.menu could reside:

  • the Xfce default location => /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu
  • distro-specific defaults => (e.g. for Xubuntu it is /etc/xdg/xdg-xubuntu/menus/xfce-applications.menu
  • user configurable location => ~/.config/menus/xfce-applications.menu

It is this user-configurable location that anyone who wants to make fundamental changes to the menu should be using. The example will be wanting to have a new category called “Multimedia-Editors”

Let’s start from the beginning:

  1. Copy over the default file for personal editing and use:

    cp /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu ~/.config/menus

  2. Create the ~/.local/share/desktop-directories/Multimedia-Editors.desktop file:

    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Directory
    Name=Multimedia-Editors
    Icon=applications-internet

  3. Create the ~/.local/share/applications/mediainfo-gui.desktop file that has its categories line like:

    Categories=Multimedia-Editors;

  4. Add the directory information into the xfce-applications.menu file (I’m inserting it just above the Development section):

    <Menu>
    <Name>Multimedia Editors</Name>
    <Directory>Multimedia-Editors.directory</Directory>
    <Include>
    <Category>Multimedia-Editors</Category>
    </Include>
    </Menu>

This should create the category for you.
